So, dearhearts, to recap our visit thus far to Kansas City:  we ate, visited the Kansas City Public Library, ate, visited the used bookstore, and ate (we also sat in a great many cars which we had no intention of buying and a couple with potential).  So, what to do on our last day?  We were tired of eating out, so it was a fend for yourself day in the kitchen (mmm, cold cereal).  Afterward, we headed to Oak Park Mall.  Which has the nicest Barnes and Noble!

This is the jaded smile from a non-reader who has been dragged to too many bookstores and photographed excessively (in her opinion).  The Glitterati get a bit testy with the paparazzi from time to time.

The Digerati eagerly peruses the latest technological breakthroughs, while the Illuminati patiently waits for his brood to finish their retail wanderings.

The Literati (not pictured) found a paperback of Beauty by Robin McKinley.  The library back home didn't have it, and it was the book club selection for the month.

The poor Snoozerati catches a few ZZZs before her next shift in a few hours (we need to pick weekends to visit in which you don't work, Bumberjean--and sorry about the photo, but you are cute in it, and the sign over your head seems appropriate).

Too soon, it was time to return home.  The rain pummeled us nearly all the way home.  I didn't photograph the worst of it, because I needed to be tense to help Mr. Bojo drive.  Once we could actually see the road again, I relaxed enough to pull out the camera and take a photo.  It's not easy being a supportive spouse and maintaining the tension necessary to drive through a rough stretch!

Hehe... the photos are great but I can't stop laughing at that last paragraph!

*chuckles some more*

I don't know what's worse--being the driver or being the passenger channeling the sympathy stress!

I always get teased by my hubby about my "sympathy braking", where I shove my foot at the floorboards to help slow down the car when he is driving.

This reminds me of our family vacations. Last summer, we were going through Springfield, MO, and missed a tornado by 5 minutes or less.

Then, on our recent Cincinnati trip (which I forgot to do the 2nd and 3rd posts about), one of our ideas turned out to be something that looked good in the tourism book, but was disappointing in person. So, we all went to Barnes & Nobles and bought books and drank Starbucks.

We did have a wall cloud "follow" us to Topeka and later discovered that there had been a tornado touch down; however, we were blissfully unaware until after the fact.

Isn't it often the case? Something glorified in a pamphlet turns out to be the biggest yawn, but something underrated often is the hit of the vacation. I cannot tell you how underwhelmed we were by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. The best part was the building which you can see without the cost of admission. (This has been a number of years ago, so hopefully those in charge have come up with more displays and a better way to showcase what should be a fascinating subject.) I guess I was expecting something worthy of a music genre known for being innovative and exciting. At the very least, I expected to hear music, but there was little of that. Videos were in separate small rooms that were often occupied to capacity, so even though I would have like to have seen them, it wasn't possible. All in all, very disappointing. Amusingly enough, my camera--which has photographed priceless art masterpieces--was not allowed to photograph my family in the lobby of RRHoF!

It looks like you had a great time (love the front of the library building!) and yikes! That's some serious rain to have to drive through!

It was raining so hard that visibility was practically zero. We would have pulled off the side of the road, but we were concerned we would be hit. It seemed safer to keep moving. Besides there were flash floods, and it seemed best to stay on the road and try to drive out of it.

Love the photos. Poor Bumberjean. I can't remember...is she a nurse?

The last photo is pretty scary! I would still have been pretty tense then. I tend to be a tense passenger in storms anyway. I find that it helps. hehe

You crack me up! :-)

Yes, Bumberjean is a nurse. She works 12-hour shifts: 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. After photographing our sleeping beauty, we went home. Bumberjean tried to stay up with us, but we told her to go to bed. She needed to get some sleep before going to work.

I do my part in sharing the tension of frightful driving!

Aw - poor Bumberjean - I've had days like that between nights at work, too.

I didn't know you worked nights. Do you have a changeable schedule?

Yes, she works 12-hour shifts: 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. She had worked that Friday night and had to work Sunday night. I'm afraid we didn't give her much sleep over the weekend. We'll have to schedule our visits when she is only going to be working one night during our stay, instead of two. Being low man on the totem as the new employee, she invariably works weekends.

didn't know you worked nights.

I don't any more - but I used to when I worked on the wards.

That last paragraph made me giggle. I invariably do the "AAAAAAAAAAH" intake of breath while Guy is driving in tense situations. This does not please him.

Poor Bumberjean!

I don't think I irritate Mr. Bojo when I "assist" his driving; at least, he has never complained! I don't make noises, but I do point out "there's a truck up ahead," and that sort of thing.

I annoy our daughter to no end, but she does the exact same thing to me! "Mom, there's a stop sign!" Yes, and it's been there for at least 30 years...

That last paragraph had me laughing out loud! Isn't that the truth...passengers can be oh-so-helpful!

Poor Bumberjean... I hope she got a nice, long nap afterwards. I do adore the fact that she was a trooper and went out with everyone despite. =) She sounds like a sweetheart!

She was a trooper, but hopefully we won't make her do it again. We've decided we need to plan these weekends around her schedule.

I would MUCH rather be the driver than the passenger in such situations. I'm not a good sitter-by. :/

not to be stupid, but which kansas city are we talking about here? this has always confused me.

We were at both of them. The river divides the city in half; on one side of the bridge is Kansas City, Missouri, and on the other is Kansas City, Kansas.

The library was in Missouri; Barnes and Noble was in Kansas. It's all one huge city. The metropolitan area equals 7,952 sq. mi.
